WWMS Hosts 12th Annual Student-Faculty Basketball Game

Posted on May 01, 2014

On Thursday, April 24th, I was once again at Woodrow Wilson Middle School to celebrate the 12th annual Lainie's Angels Spirit Week and Student-Faculty basketball game.

Since the start of this great event, the kids and staff at WWMS have raised over twenty thousand dollars for our mission of helping the families of kids with cancer and blood disorders.

For the second year in a row, mounted the Woodrow Wilson Challenge, asking their friends and family to support their efforts during Spirit Week, which is a week of fund-raising activities culminating with the basketball game on Thursday.  The kids participate in school during their lunch periods with poetry and rap contests, as well as donate money for their favorite teacher.  The teacher who raises the most money gets a pie in the face!  This year, the honor went to Mike Franciscus, who was pied by one of his favorite students.

This year's game was also the closest one on record.  The teachers won a thriller by one point in overtime.  A heart-breaking loss for the students who dominated the game until the last two minutes.  The game was sent into overtime when one of the student's hit a three point shot to even the score.  Let me tell you, it was a great game and everyone came out a winner.

I want to take a moment to thank our sponsor for the game, Mrs. Reeta Agarwal and her company BrightStar Home Care.  Reeta is a huge fan of Lainie's Angels and one of our most devoted New Jersey volunteers.  Her son Guarav is a student at WWMS, and I want to thank them for their generosity and support.

Other volunteers who helped us again this year were Steve and Jessie from Pinnacle Financial Group of Edison, New Jersey and Main Street Trattoria of Metuchen, New Jersey.  We thank them for their continued support.

Finally, I want to send my love and thanks to the students, teachers and staff of WWMS, and especially our biggest WWMS angel, Marc Gesualdo.  Without Marc's dedication to Lainie's Angels, we would not be at the twelve-year mark and have raised the much-needed funds for our program.  Thanks Marc, and God bless you.  And thanks to all of you that supported the kids’ efforts this year.

With love,
